The Workabout Scanner is a powerful hand held computer
that features a 16-bit processor, a multi-tasking windowing environment
and a large memory to meet the most demanding data storage and
application requirements. Its award-winning ergonomic design is compact
and light weight, making it comfortable for use over longer periods. The
scanner head is adjustable enabling the user to set the angle to the
most comfortable level for the task in hand. The keyboard is also fitted
with a large "Scan" key, placed on the upper part of the
keyboard for easy operation. To ensure fail safe scanning, a bright
indicator and audible bleeper on the Workabout Scanner confirms the code
has been successfully scanned and accepted by the application. The
Scanner recognizes all common barcode symbologies. The Workabout Scanner
is ideal for a wide variety of non-contact barcode reading tasks such as
stock management, track and trace, inventory management, sales order
entry, pick and pack, activity monitoring, and work in progress. Psion's
Visual Basic compatible programming language, OVAL, enables the
Workabout Scanner to be easily programmed for customer specific
applications. It means that data collection, and other types of
programs, can be written quickly and prototype applications developed in
hours. The Workabout Scanner retains an interface for easy connection to
all standard communication equipment and peripherals such as the Psion
Docking Station which facilitates simultaneous re-charging and
communication. In addition, the RS232 port in the base gives extra
connectivity to other peripherals. The standard rechargeable Workabout
NiCd battery pack typically provides power for scanning over an 8 hour
shift. For more scan intensive applications an optional Nickel Metal
Hydride (NiMH) battery pack is also available. The NiMH and NiCd pack
can both be fast charged using the Workabout Docking Station or
Workabout Multiple Docking Station.
