Y2K Wizard is an easy-to-use program that runs under DOS when you first boot your system. It tests and displays the status of the system Real Time Clock and CMOS RAM, and it shows whether your system Real Time Clock, BIOS, and operating system are Year 2000 (Y2K) compliant. The main function of the program is to verify that the system can roll over from 1999 to 2000 at midnight on 31 December 1999, that it can maintain that date during century 20, and that the leap year in years after 1999 are handled correctly.

Y2K Wizard also corrects any Y2K bug found in the hardware, and sets your system to the correct date whenever the system boots. It does this at boot time, using a TSR (Terminate and Stay Resident) program that is loaded by AUTOEXEC.BAT. Y2K Wizard installs itself in your AUTOEXEC.BAT when you select the Install menu item. The TSR is completely non-toxic to your system.

The Y2K Problem

Your system's Real Time Clock is supposed to keep track of the date accurately, and many application programs depend on a reliable, accurate date. Unfortunately, the original IBM AT's CMOS RAM and Real Time Clock (all in one circuit, the MC146818 chip) and most clones do not have a century counter. So, when the century changes from 19 to 20, the RTC just ignores it.

Your system BIOS (Basic Input Output System) is supposed to keep track of the century. However, many BIOSes do not do this. As a result, your system date can be wrong during the entire period of time after 1999. This can cause no end of problems with application programs. Such programs need an accurate date so as to determine, for example, whether a credit card has expired. Modern businesses are seriously at risk of disruption because of this problem.

The Y2K Wizard Solution

Our solution is four-fold:

• Test the RTC, BIOS, and DOS to ensure they are Year 2000 compliant, and report the status to you.
• Repair any non-compliance in the BIOS and RTC each time you boot the computer.
• Keep your system date up-to-date by reminding you if it falls behind, even if it is Y2K-compliant.

The only other way you can fix the bug is to add in an expensive BIOS replacement card, replace the BIOS chip, or replace the motherboard. While it is usually more cost effective to replace the motherboard, that does cost a lot of money, especially when you have quite a number of non-compliant systems. Why Do I need the Extra Features?

Unlike other Y2K solutions, Y2K Wizard does a complete job of validating your Year 2000-related hardware and software, right up to (but not including) your Application Programs. Here is why:

• The CMOS RAM contains system configuration information. Our test verifies it can be written and read properly.
• The Clock Battery is supposed to keep the RTC and CMOS RAM alive when system power is off. If it dies or gets weak, you can lose the configuration and time/date, making it impossible to boot the computer. In some cases a technician is required to service the system and set everything back the way it was. Battery status is shown every time you boot when you have Y2K Wizard installed.
• RTC Activity is a verification that the clock is actually counting properly. It does no good to check date compliance if the clock is not even counting properly.
• RTC Synchronicity verifies the BIOS and RTC time and date actually coincide. This lets you know whether you need to reset the time and date.
• RTC Accuracy verifies that the RTC counts accurately. The RTC is notoriously inaccurate. The test fails if it is more than 15 seconds off in a day. A failure indicates you may need to replace the RTC or motherboard in order to have accurate time and date information each time you boot.
• RTC Y2K Rollover verifies the RTC can roll over to the new century properly with its existing counters. Failure indicates you must replace the RTC or motherboard.
• BIOS Y2K Rollover verifies BIOS can compensate for inherent inaccuracies of the RTC entering and during century 20. This failure is fixed by Y2K Wizard if you leave the program installed so it runs at boot time.
• DOS Y2K Rollover verifies the operating system can be set to and roll over to century 20. If it fails, you need to replace or update the operating system.
• Y2K Leap Year verifies the BIOS/RTC can roll over from February 28 to February 29 in the year 2000. Y2K Wizard corrects this problem if the test fails.
• You can save and restore the entire contents of CMOS RAM to a file on a floppy diskette so you can recover instantly from a battery failure without having to reconfigure the CMOS except for setting up the floppy drive.

Makes Sure Your System Date Does Not Fall Behind

Y2K Wizard actually verifies that the system BIOS date is never earlier than the release date of the program, or earlier than the last time you entered the date. The reason it does this is that the RTC in some systems is so inaccurate that it loses minutes per day. Sometimes a weak battery is not detected by the chip, but it makes the system date even more inaccurate. In reality, you never have a guarantee that the date is correct, whether or not there is a Y2K problem.

To cure this, Y2K Wizard prompts you to enter the correct date if it ever detects a date that is utterly impossible, such as being earlier than the release date of the software. This helps you keep your system date up-to-date.
