We
slaved over our hot software stove to cook up a CPU detector that works FAST and
sure to show you what CPU you have in your computer, ranging from the latest to
the oldest. If you are a system builder or maintenance technician, you want to
know reliably what's running the computer. That way you can understand the kind
of problems that exist in the system, especially when it is not compatible with
the CPU!
Most
diagnostic solutions out there just tell you it's a 286 or 386, and doesn't
identify the manufacturer at all. WhatCPU does all that and much more. It
identifies 8088, 8086, 80286, V20, V30, 80386, 80386SX, 80486, 80486SX, 80586,
P5, P6, P7, 5x86, 6x86, Pentium, Pentium Pro, and all the major manufacturers,
including Intel, AMD, Cyrix, and NexGen.
That's
right! In case you didn't know it, certain scurrilous companies out there in the
world have been buying AMD 486 CPUs and remarking them as Intel 486 CPUs, and
you can't tell the difference from the REAL THING! We know. We've seen it with
our own eyes! It could be happening to you. Your system might contain a remarked
CPU and you don't even know it! Would it matter? Possibly not, but CPU makers
work hard to make their chips reliable, and a remarked CPU might not be as
reliable because of going through extra handling and other reasons. That means
it could be flakey or intermittent in your system, and it could fail
prematurely, costing you a lot of money. Because of WhatCPU's BRUTAL CPU
detection algorithms, it will tell you the exact developer of the CPU in your
system, every time. It can save you both money and embarrassment as a result
because you can run it on a CPU BEFORE you invest in the CPU rather than when
it's too late!
As
you might know, all the most modern CPUs contain a special CPU ID instruction by
which the CPU tells application software who and what the CPU is. WhatCPU uses
that instruction to its fullest and gives you complete information about the CPU
as a result. This is faster and more reliable than old algorithms that risk
hanging up the computer.
Calculating
CPU speed is extremely difficult. That is because the prefetch queue is
necessary to do an accurate test, and the queue does not always operate in
accordance with manufacturer specifications - sometimes-undocumented features
interfere. So we have constructed a special algorithm that determines speed
factors empirically if need be. If you run across a new CPU, you can run the
empirical speed calibration test and use the resulting number to derive correct
speed. Using this method, the software does not go out of date.
WhatCPU
tells you the REAL clock speed the CPU is running at, not the
"P-Rating". The P-Rating is a valuable benchmark technique that shows
the required clock rate of a Pentium CPU to get the same performance as a given
Non-Intel Pentium-Class CPU. You can read more about it in the P-Rating
Specification.
It got kind of messy trying to keep track of all the CPUs released by the big boys, so we created a massive database of the hot new Cyrix, Intel, and AMD CPUs. We put all CPUs offering the CPUID or other reporting information in one database. If a new one comes out, you just add it to the database, so the software never goes out of date. Also, you can use information in the database to determine if your CPU is being overclocked, or run at too fast a rate for error-free operation.
Sick
of not knowing what kind of cache is in your system? Not any more. WhatCPU
contains two methods of determining cache, both Level 1 (inside the CPU) and
Level 2 (outside the CPU, except for the Pentium Pro and clones). We actually
calculate the cache size for both level 1 and level 2 except for those CPUs that
hand us the information on a silver platter, like the Pentium, AMD K5/K6, and
Pentium Pro. Since they TELL us what the cache size is, we don't need to
calculate it.
Have
you been wondering how fast your memory is? WhatCPU TELLS YOU, whether it is
ROM, system RAM, cache, display memory, or adapter RAM. You can tell if it's
shadowed, cached, or native. You end the mystery, once and for all, AND you can
tell WHICH RAM is the fastest in your system. WhatCPU displays data transfer
rate to memory in Kilobytes per Second.
Yes,
we do offer WhatCPU as a free download (see our home page). But you can get the
professional version with full help and extra features built in. All you have to
do is order on-line.
Yes, if you are a computer builder or parts distributor, you can provide WhatCPU to your customers with YOUR NAME ON IT. Just EMAIL us if you are interested. WhatCPU constantly scrolls an advertising marquee across the bottom of the display telling the customer what you have to offer. You can and should bundle this fine product with every system and CPU you ship. Sure, YOU know what kind of CPU you ship, but YOUR CUSTOMERS DON'T! They can use it to PROVE your competitors are (or are not) shipping remarked parts!
We poured a ton of work into developing WhatCPU. We put the discovery components from it into our PC Clinic System diagnostic's Editor's Choice-winning discovery engine (originally from InfoSpotter). Normally, we would just put it in PC Clinic and let it go at that, but we thought it was so valuable as a standalone tool that we went ahead and made it available to you. For all that work, it only shows three lines of information in PC Clinic, but they are powerfully informative lines. Don't delay putting this technology to work for you. Get your WhatCPU today.
